The station is some 600 metres from the town centre and is on an important road route to the Ceiriog Valley, Chirk Castle and Lady Margarets caravan park. For many visitors it is the gateway to these attractions and the Friends were keen to show it as a welcoming and cared for station. The gardens on platform 2 were planted in previous years but the entire area was in need of a general pruning and weeding and the Friends were keen to have planters installed to inject some colour into the area. The area around the bus stop was also in need of trimming back and tidying.

The first project was therefore the gardens and a general tidy up and with sponsorship from Arriva Trains Wales and Kids4Kidz the group applied for funding to the Rural Scheme funded by the Welsh assembly and administered by Wrexham County Borough Council. They were delighted to be awarded over £4800 towards a project to install fencing and planters on platform 1.

Work began in early October 2004 and it is planned to have the pruning done and the area tidied in preparation for a visit by Karen Sinclair, Assembly Member, on the 30th October. Arriva Trains Wales will also take the opportunity to present the group with a plaque and certificate to the Friends as part of the Station Adoption project.
